HaLong Bay - World's Heritage
Situated in the North-East region of Vietnam, Halong Bay is a bay in the Gulf of Tonkin comprised of regions of Halong City, the township of Cam Pha, and a part of the island district of Van Don. Halong Bay borders Cat Ba Island in the southwest, the East Sea in the east, and the mainland, creating a 120 km coastline.
Halong Bay is made up of 1,969 islands of various sizes, 989 of which have been given names. There are two kinds of islands, limestone and schist, which are concentrated in two main zones: the southeast (belonging to Bai Tu Long Bay), and the southwest (belonging to Halong Bay). This densely concentrated zone of stone islands, world famous for its spectacular scenery of grottoes and caves, forms the central zone of Halong Bay, which has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The bay itself has an area of 43,400 ha, consists of 775 islands, and forms a triangle with the island of Dau Go (Driftwood Grotto) to the west, the lake of Ba Ham (Three Shelter Lake) to the south, and the island of Cong Tay to the east.
Viewed from above, Halong Bay resembles a geographic work of art. While Halong bay cruise, you feel lost in a legendary world of stone islands. There is Man's Head Island, which resembles a man standing and looking towards the mainland. Dragon Island looks like a dragon hovering above the turquoise water. La Vong Island resembles an old man fishing. There are also the islands of the Sail, the Pair of Roosters, and the Incense Burner, which all astonishingly resemble their namesakes. The forms of the islands change depending on the angle of the light and from where the islands are viewed. At the core of the islands, there are wonderful caves and grottoes, such as Thien Cung (Heavenly Residence Grotto), Dau Go (Driftwood Grotto), Sung Sot (Surprise Grotto), and Tam Cung (Three Palace Grotto).
Halong Bay has many links to the history of Vietnam. For example, there are such famous geographical sites as Van Don (site of an ancient commercial port), Poem Mountain (with engravings of many poems about emperors and other famous historical figures), and Bach Dang River (the location of two fierce naval battles fought against foreign aggressors).
It has been proven by scientists that Halong was one of the first cradles of human existence in the area at such archeological sites as Dong Mang, Xich Tho, Soi Nhu, and Thoi Gieng. It is also a region of highly-concentrated biological diversity with many ecosystems of salt water-flooded forests, coral reefs, and tropical forests featuring thousands of species of animal and plant life.
With all this in mind, the 18th meeting of the Committee of the World Heritages of UNESCO (in Thailand on December 17th, 1994), officially recognized Halong Bay as a natural heritage site of worldwide importance and Ha Long Bay became one of the New 7 Wonders of the World in 2011

Qatar's State-owned oil company Qatar Petroleum International plans to invest $5.8 billion to build a petrochemical plant in China by 2015, according to a Bloomberg report Wednesday. Nasser al-Jaidah, the CEO of Qatar Petroleum said the company plans to cooperate with China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) and a Chinese petrochemicals maker to invest $5.8 billion to build a plant in China's Hainan Province. "There is huge potential for growth in Asia, especially China," al-Jaidah said. "We can hit two birds with one stone – tap the markets and exit our product," he said, but did not disclose the share of the investment that Qatar Petroleum will have in the venture. He also disclosed the company plans for the plant to have a processing capacity of about 3.8 million tons of LPG a year, and this plan may be approved by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in the second half of next year. But Xiao Zongwei, spokesman of CNOOC, said he was not informed about any petrochemical investment in Hainan, according to the Bloomberg report. The Qatar oil company plans a total investment of $9.8 billion to build two petrochemical plants in Asia by 2015, and the remaining $4 billion will be invested in Vietnam. Under the current preferential policy, home-owners who sell housing units that they have held for more than two years are exempted from a turnover tax, according to a circular jointly issued by the Ministry of Finance and the State Administration of Taxation at the end of last year. The preferential policy, which began January 1, is set last until December 31, 2009, according to the circular. The buyers end up paying the turnover tax, so the home-owners benefit more from the policy, Duan Wei, advisor of Homelink Real Estate Agent (Beijing) told the Global Times on Sunday. "Nearly 30 to 40 percent of the people who bought homes in Century City (a residential zone) in October in Beijing were afraid of the expiration of the policy," Duan said. "And the sales volume at Century City in October has been bigger than in September," he added. But analysts remain divided on whether the policy should be continued. "We hope the preferential policy will be continued," Hu Jinghui, deputy manager of housing agency 5I5J, was quoted by real estate information website http://www.focus.cn as saying. The enormous increase in second-hand home sales is directly related to the policy, he explained. SHANGHAI, Feb 23 - China is considering a packageof measures to provide long-term support for its residentialhousing market, including the scrapping of curbs on purchases ofsecond homes, official media reported on Monday. The China Securities Journal quoted an unnamed,authoritative source as saying the National Development andReform Commission, the top economic planning agency, was nowreviewing proposals submitted by the construction ministry. The package would aim to increase demand for owners toimprove their homes, cut tax costs for people buying and sellinghomes, and help low-income people buy homes, the source said. There are also proposals for the government to buy a smallamount of housing stock to help it prevent excessive pricefluctuations, and for steps to ensure home buyers and developersreceive ample long-term financing, the newspaper added. Developers would be allowed to create real estate investmenttrusts (REITs) as soon as possible to bolster their funding,while rules restricting the amount of institutions' investmentin property would be abolished or relaxed. The newspaper did not say when the package might beintroduced. China Shougang Group will buy Changzhi Iron & Steel (Group) Co., Ltd for 5 million yuan after five months of negotiations, signaling a significant move in China's steel industry's cross-region reorganization policy. The deal means Shougang Group will receive 90 percent of Changzhi's shares, and the remaining 10 percent held by Changzhi Steel. The company will change its name to Shougang Changzhi Iron & Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. Cu Chi is actually a rural district 30-40 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh, so tourists will usually have to hire a car/driver or be part of a tour group in order to reach the tunnels. And it’s not just tunnels in one location! Remember that the network can cover over 250 kms, tunnels being several stories deep – some of them probably even undiscovered still…

So, you have two choices as to where to go. The most popular one where most tourists go is at BEN DINH, just 50 km from HCMC (admission about 65,000d as of 2010). Here you will learn the history of the tunnels and also see large maps showing its extensiveness. A few hundred meters of tunnels are available for visiting by tourists – most tunnels being only 1.2 m high and 80cm across – and not lighted at all! The Vietnamese were of very small stature allowing them to navigate through these tunnels with ease – and the bigger American soldiers would find it too cramped and almost impossible to traverse. Definitely, going into the tunnels is not for the claustrophobic!

The other place where tourists go is at BEN DUOC which where our tour guide decided to bring us. He said there are “less tourists” here (less crowded) and on the map, it does seem to be farther from HCMC than Ben Dinh. The tunnels here are still small but some of them have been enlarged to accommodate the tourists, and in the tunnels themselves, there are mannequins depicting how life was before during the war – there is a surgery facility, meeting areas, dining halls…with us was a Vietnamese in Viet Cong attire and he would show us how the Viet Congs used the tunnels through camouflaging the “cover” with leaves. He would vanish under the leaves and reappear a few feet away through another opening! Haha – my friend who was no too tall was able to go through that tunnel – but I must warn you not to attempt it if you are very claustrophobic!

Overall, a very enriching experiencing to see the tunnels…but I enjoyed more walking through the jungle-like areas before we saw the tunnels. Just be watchful of bats (also inside the tunnels) and spiders and ticks – so I do advise wearing pants and not shorts! Also, you will sweat specially during the summer (so bring an extra shirt, or in my case, I just brough some T-shirts on sale there which were just about $5 or less each)

HCM City to host large int’l tourism exhibition

The seventh International Tourism Exhibition will take place in Ho Chi Minh City from Sept. 14-17, a municipal official has said.
